Look under a property where there is a suspicion of rising damp and where possible.
Many of the clues and risks will be under the floorboard.
This property was recently chemically damp proofed but remains damp, as rising damp was not, and very rarely ever is the root cause.
Carefully get into eaves above a damp patch. Visit the neighbours. Measure sub-floor humidity through a crack in the floor.
Look for past damp proofing treatment, these can cause damp issues as water, can’t absorb and evaporate water safely away.
This recently purchased Victorian was renegotiated for rising damp treatment, but the new owner had suspicions, so asked for a second opinion.
Victorian house with quote for £20K Kenwood chemical damp treatment turned out to be a blocked drain. Additional damp from vapour & roof leak.
Mould on the first floor. Radiator had been turned off – easy fix. Dehumidifier, insulation, anti-mould paint and ventilation longer term fix.
Two damp issues; (1) rain from chimney, flaunching, roof leak (2) vapour, mould, condensation from: extractor fan (fixed) kitchen & fish tank
Determining causes when two are mixed together. Penetrating damp from render cracks mixed with hygroscopic salts from the chimney breast.
